Unit 1 Reading Response

“Don’t Make Me Think”, by Steve Krug

The introduction to the book covered one main point: I don’t know.
The author professes to only have general tips and given the media and
its constant evolving nature, there is no right or wrong; just what works.

Chapter one discusses the need for visual hierarchy, obvious click-ability,
necessity, and first impressions. Allowing the viewer to react naturally and
without thought. Making sure auto-complete is logical as well as all links
being self-evident is important in usability.

Chapter two of the book covers the concept that people do not read: they
skim. The book discusses users on the Internet being inherently inept at
deciphering subtle navigation and complicated layouts. Simplicity being
important as well as clear placement and interactivity. It is noted that
designer’s work on the web may be interpreted differently than expected.
The idea that users will look at every element  and follow what matches
their needs is not always the case. They may click on the first thing they
see, leaving the initial information intended.

Mood boards offer an avenue for creating a feel and concept of colors
and theme without spending days on a design. They are a quick look
at an idea without words.
